The month of May annually marks Community Living Month across Ontario. It is a month in which we celebrate the gifts and talents that people with intellectual challenges bring to our communities.
On May 1, 2015 Community Living~Fort Erie raised their flag at Town Hall in celebration of Community Living Month.
The May Flag raising brought over 40 individuals who support the work of Community Living~Fort Erie together. People who receive support, staff, volunteers, and community members gathered with Mayor Wayne Redekop to recognize and celebrate the contributions made by Community Living~Fort Erie to their community. Tyler Williamson spoke on his achievements and beliefs.
I have been supported by Community Living Fort Erie for 11 years. I wanted to share with you some of the things that Community Living~Fort Erie has helped me with. They have helped my parents to find services that they needed while I was growing up. I have been part of groups where I have been able to share my feelings about bullying to help others.
When I finished school I wanted to work, like all young men my age want to do. Community Living~Fort Erie helped me find a job. I have made many new friends through my job. I am a valued employee of the Boys and Girls Club. I am a Meals on Wheels and Friendship Festival volunteer. I am very important to these organizations where I volunteer my time.
I am learning to take the Fort Erie/Niagara transit by myself. I enjoy the theatre, motor sport activities and sporting events with friends that I made through Community Living Fort Erie.
I believe that people should help each other. I help others in my community. I believe I should have the same rights as everyone else. I have set goals and I want to achieve them. With support I WILL!!
I believe that people should accept differences. Just because I am different should not make me less valuable. I believe that people should be treated the same. I have the same dreams and goals as other people. I am connected to family, friends and neighbours. I have a job and I volunteer.
I feel like I am part of my community because of the support I have received from Community Living~Fort Erie. I am proud of what I have accomplished with the help of Community Living.
EVERY PERSON SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE INCLUDED IN THEIR COMMUNITY!!
